Deer Outside My Window

IMG_4844One side of my dorm’s building faces the parking lot, and the other faces a vast expanse of woods.

My room is on the latter side, which means two things:

  1. I miss out on beautiful Ithaca sunsets.
  2. My people-watching ability is hindered.

But it also means that I have plenty of deer-watching opportunities.

In fact, there’s a family of 11 or 12 deer (it’s hard to tell the exact number because their fur matches the forest SO WELL. Camouflage, y’all). And they’re freaking adorable, so we’re obsessed with them. We even played them music once, which they didn’t seem to appreciate but also didn’t seem to dislike.

We definitely chose the right side of the building.

  1. Deer look way adorable! I’ve never seen one alive but we had a dead one at the biology lab at my elementary school for the blind. Not fun to know the deer is dead, but it was fun to touch it. We do have deer in the forest near my town too.

  2. Thanks for stopping by my blog. I have a friend who recently taught or is teaching a course at Ithaca. We live in Northern NJ and have lots of deer living in our back woods. So fun to see, as long as they keep away from my blooming plants : ) Good luck with the challenge!

  3. That would be a cool site out of your dorm room. When I was in college, one side opened to a open area which was typically empty and the other was a small window by the bathroom sink. That window faced one of the main school paths but with the window near the bathroom sink, it wouldn’t have been a comfortable place to people watch. I would rather have seen deer anyway.

  4. I love deer as well. But my border collie hampers my enjoyment as I like to walk in a park that goes for miles. Sometimes I’m unaware that the deer are near until my dog takes off trying to herd them. Then I see them bounding away. It’s a pretty picture, though!

  5. Lovely! I always associate deer with my grandmother’s house — out in the woods, we used to see big herds(?) of deer in the yard all the time and it was magical. Of course, in Alabama we pretty much see ones and twos everywhere all the time… But never as many at once as at her house. :)

Definitely the appropriate side of the building.

  6. In California, our neighborhood had a troop of about 20 deer that wandered around the whole complex most days. The crazy thing was that the does understood traffic laws. They walked on sidewalks and only crossed the street at the crosswalks. It was pretty amusing.

You definitely chose the right side of the building. :)

    • My theme is pretty flexible :) someone else blogging about college likely wouldn’t include the deer but they’re part of my experience, so why not??
