One side of my dorm’s building faces the parking lot, and the other faces a vast expanse of woods.
My room is on the latter side, which means two things:
- I miss out on beautiful Ithaca sunsets.
- My people-watching ability is hindered.
But it also means that I have plenty of deer-watching opportunities.
In fact, there’s a family of 11 or 12 deer (it’s hard to tell the exact number because their fur matches the forest SO WELL. Camouflage, y’all). And they’re freaking adorable, so we’re obsessed with them. We even played them music once, which they didn’t seem to appreciate but also didn’t seem to dislike.
We definitely chose the right side of the building.

I love watching wild life – we used to go deer stalking on Exmoor when we went there on holiday so we could watch them sometimes :). Sounds like your view is much more comfortable!

Very much so! Wild animals can be so much fun to watch. They’re so fascinating.

I find watching wildlife really relaxing. I have a great view from my bedroom window, down on our back garden and then across a valley. Sometimes when the mist is low in the mornings and the sun is just coming up, it is so beautiful.

Last year my dorm faced a lake, and I loved waking up in the morning and looking out at how beautiful it was.

Deer look way adorable! I’ve never seen one alive but we had a dead one at the biology lab at my elementary school for the blind. Not fun to know the deer is dead, but it was fun to touch it. We do have deer in the forest near my town too.

They’re such cool animals. I used to feed them at my grandma’s house when I was younger.

Thanks for stopping by my blog. I have a friend who recently taught or is teaching a course at Ithaca. We live in Northern NJ and have lots of deer living in our back woods. So fun to see, as long as they keep away from my blooming plants : ) Good luck with the challenge!

Deer are not well-loved by gardeners, I know that! Thanks, & good luck to you too :)

Oh I’d love to be able to deer watch. And sunsets are overrated when you are trying to nap.

That would be a cool site out of your dorm room. When I was in college, one side opened to a open area which was typically empty and the other was a small window by the bathroom sink. That window faced one of the main school paths but with the window near the bathroom sink, it wouldn’t have been a comfortable place to people watch. I would rather have seen deer anyway.

We have deer outside our house nearly every day. Once they have fawns, they’ll be playing in the backyard at all hours. Cool neighbors you have.

I love deer as well. But my border collie hampers my enjoyment as I like to walk in a park that goes for miles. Sometimes I’m unaware that the deer are near until my dog takes off trying to herd them. Then I see them bounding away. It’s a pretty picture, though!

Understandable! Dogs have a hard time suppressing their instincts.

That is so cool :-)
I’ve never seen deer (I mean, wild deer) in my life, though I sister encountered some crossing her way on the mountains.
But… I’ve encountered moose. Does that count? :-)

Jealous! I wanna see a moose! :)

I’d say that’s even cooler, but it’s all a matter of what we’re used to, I think!

I worry about the deer’s taste in music :/

They seemed pretty neutral about it. Not terrified but not overly intrigued either.

Lovely! I always associate deer with my grandmother’s house — out in the woods, we used to see big herds(?) of deer in the yard all the time and it was magical. Of course, in Alabama we pretty much see ones and twos everywhere all the time… But never as many at once as at her house. :)
Definitely the appropriate side of the building.

I’ve only ever seen as many as four at a time, so seeing 11 or 12 outside my window is exciting.

Wildlife watching is fun. I don’t see any deer where I live in Florida, but I would love to look out my window to see one. :)

In California, our neighborhood had a troop of about 20 deer that wandered around the whole complex most days. The crazy thing was that the does understood traffic laws. They walked on sidewalks and only crossed the street at the crosswalks. It was pretty amusing.
You definitely chose the right side of the building. :)

That’s hilarious! These deer probably don’t know traffic laws, but they don’t have to :)

Didn’t expect you to get that sort of wildlife post with your theme. If you can’t see the sunset presumably you could, if you were up early.., see deer as the sunrises.

My theme is pretty flexible :) someone else blogging about college likely wouldn’t include the deer but they’re part of my experience, so why not??

Haha, I love that you guys played Bruno Mars for the deer. How did he/she like it?

Good thing my hubby isn’t in your dorm room. He’d be setting up a deer stand in there. I could see deer maybe getting into a little Uptown Funk. If you don’t believe me, just watch. ;)
