Finally, An Answer

It’s been a long time since I’ve been asked, “What’d you learn in school today, Sabina?”

It’s a question that I don’t think should disappear as we age into high school and college. We should always be sharing things we’ve learned, discussing their implications, thinking critically about their importance or lack thereof.

Today in my Basic Audiology class we learned about properties of sound. My professor defined sound as a pressure wave that begins at a source (for speech, it’s the vocal folds), then moves through air particles to reach a receiver.

“You know that age-old question, ‘If a tree falls in a forest but nobody is around to hear it, did it still make a sound?’” my professor prompted, “It didn’t. The wave has to be received for it to be considered a sound.”

Finally, an answer.
